Low Cost of Text Messaging

National Telecommunications Commission called the leading telecommunications company in the Phillipines for a public hearing to discuss the possible reducing of text messaging and voice calls prices.

The NTC signed a twin circulars to slash the access charge for text messaging between different operators to 15 centavos from 35 centavos. The commission believes that this would drive down the price of text messaging from the nominal rate of 1 peso to about 60 or 65 centavos.

Free Text Messages Proposal was Rejected

Smart and Globe, two big telecommunication company in the Philippines rejects the proposal of free text messages in the country.

Legal counsel of Smart Communications said that imposing a free short messages service (SMS) would cause severe congestion in their network. And will affect their more than a billion incoming and outgoing text messages sent in the Philippines in a day.

Also according to them SMS charges in the Philippines were already one of the lowest compared to compared to P1.60 per SMS in Singapore; P2.70 in Thailand; P10.50 in Australia; P6.62 in Canada; P1.16 in Middle East; and P2.59 in the United Kingdom.
